MID-WINTER PIGGING
W
ild pigs have been getting
a bit high in numbers and
annoying the farmers in
some parts of Otago.
As winter kicks in, the ground softens and
the porkers come down to the improved
ground and get the grubbers out, wrecking
all the hard work of establishing a decent
pasture. The choppers and shooters have
been called out on many stations for cull to
waste programs to reduce the numbers. A
crying shame from a hunter’s point of view, but

it is simply pest control for those land owners.
We gathered a crew of blokes and youngsters
with an assortment of dogs and headed south
to see if we could capture some of these
“pests” and turn them into meat to feed several
different families. Just before the weekend
that we’d put aside for the trip, a real beast of
a Sou’wester came through dumping a decent
load of snow and leaving minus 20 degree
Celsius night temperatures in its wake.
The snow and ice caused many of the
stations to go into a shutdown mode where
travel around the properties was difficult and
