Big Game Hunting New Zealand Jul/Aug 2015 | Page 32
With the weather forecast
looking worse than average for
the next few days we decided
not to fly camp out but use the
hut as a base and the HMS Cave
as our mode of transport. I made
a plan with dad to be dropped
off at the bottom of a gully in the
Southwest arm for a days bush
hunting while he checked out a
similar gully on the other side.
The going was pretty good with a
lot of stag sign seen but very wet
conditions and no roaring made it
hunting hard. It wasn’t until I was
a few hundred metres from being
picked up I saw a red hind watching me walk
through the bush. She was hardly bothered by
me and gave me time to get the camera out
and film. My pick up was waiting for me while
being savaged by sandflies. We settled into
the comfortable hut for another night with our
bellies full of Blue cod.
