The communities of Study Butte, Terlingua, and Lajitas
are a beautiful 80-mile drive south of Alpine along Hwy.
118, or an equally scenic 110-mile drive south from
Marfa along Hwy. 67 and 170. These stark but
amazingly beautiful outposts should be part of any visit
to the Big Bend. For decades, artists, musicians,
merrymakers, and mavericks have called this abandoned
mining district home.
With Big Bend National and Big Bend Ranch State
parks adjacent to these remote border towns, unspoiled
vistas are a true source of inspiration for many fine
photographers and painters who live here. The
wilderness entices, enchants, and even intimidates
visitors. But don’t be afraid! River guides and outfitters
are on stand-by to take you safely through that next big
adventure.
And inviting galleries are tucked into the dusty
landscape, beckoning a peek inside, where visions of
local artists serve as wonderful guides to the lively desert
world.
The resourcefulness of artist materials, seen in much
of the local work, shows an appreciation born from
remote living. One must endure long hard droughts for
that rare and wondrous summer rain. One must make
the most from very little.
This is also a musical region, with the annual Chili Fest
happening each October, and causal concerts springing
up in unlikely places, from cemeteries to parking lots.
Impromptu music fills the air as a guitar circle tunes up
on the Porch of Terlingua Trading Company in the old
Terlingua Ghostown.
Study Butte/Terlingua is the rustic counterpoint to the
upscale resort community of Lajitas. Lajitas Golf Resort
has a world-class 18-hole golf course, voted the most
beautiful by Golf Magazine. Other offerings include the
Lajitas Zip Line, Equestrian Center, and Agave Spa. For
