building at 101 Spring Street in New York, which is open to the public for guided visits
and special exhibitions, and Judd’s three ranches in the Chinati Mountains south of
Marfa. ere are over 50,000 square feet of permanently installed spaces with artwork
by Judd and from his personal collection, including works by his contemporaries Dan
Flavin and Frank Stella. ere is also furniture displayed by both Judd and the early
modernist furniture designers Gerrit Rietveld and Alvar Aalto. e Judd Foundation
offers public access to these living and working spaces through guided visits.
In October 2018, the Judd Foundation announced a long-term restoration plan for
its buildings in Marfa. e goal, according to the Foundation, is “protection and
restoration of spaces; completion of Judd’s buildings and architecture; expansion of
conservation and research facilities; and public access to permanently installed
spaces."
Aside from his personal living and working spaces, which are part of the Judd
Foundation, the artist established the Chinati Foundation at Fort D.A. Russell in 1986.
Founded as a public institution of permanently installed works, including Judd’s own
sculptures and works by artists he admired, the Chinati Foundation functions as a
separate organization and is open to the public. is was Judd’s wish, and today the
two foundations operate independently yet often collaborate on events and projects.
