Dye your own Easter eggs
TIP
Before you start, blow the yolks out of your eggs or hard boil
them and let them cool before you dye them.
Natural Egg Dye
Create food- or plant-based dyes. Simmer beetroot, blueberries,
or other naturally bright coloured ingredients in a cup of water
with a dash of vinegar to create the colours. Leave eggs soaking
in the natural dye in the refrigerator overnight for the richest
colour; soak just a few minutes for more subtle results.
Rice-Dyed Eggs
Chances are you’ve got everything you need in your pantry to
make rice-dyed Easter eggs. Dyeing eggs with rice is as easy as
dropping food colouring on plain rice and giving it a shake. Mix
colours for a pretty speckled pattern and display your finished
rice Easter eggs in a simple basket.
USE CRAYONS
Draw lines and images on the egg using crayons or oil pastels.
Dye the egg - make an egg dye by mixing ¾ cup warm water,
1 tablespoon white vinegar and 10 drops food colouring.
Submerge the egg in the dye for at least 5 minutes. After 5
minutes or so, remove the egg from the dye. The entire egg
should be coloured except for the crayon lines which resist the
dye. Set the egg aside to dry.
