There are approximately 200 caves in the Black Hills, including two in the Southern Hills: Jewel Cave National Monument and Wind Cave National Park.
Jewel Cave is the second-longest cave in the United States and fifthlongest cave in the world, at over 220 miles long and 820 feet deep, while Wind Cave, at over 165 miles, is the third-longest cave in the United States and the sixth-longest in the world.
Ranger-guided tours cover a variety of topics and tours are offered at both locations, both in the caves and on their surface. These tours stir the imagination and educate the mind. Both caves are open yearround. A reservation from recreation. gov and a light jacket is recommended for cave tours, and fully enclosed shoes are required.
