If you only get a chance to go to one place while visiting Custer , Custer ’ s Last Stop can be your one-stop shop . In addition to a wide variety of quality gifts and goods ranging from handbags to wool blankets and from games to apparel . The business also offers visitors a place to enjoy a hot meal with its selection of classic all-American fare .
The family-run business specializes in quality retail items and gifts that capture the spirit of the area — they carry the Pendleton line , a selection of handmade and concealed-carry bags , Ecualama alpaca blankets , apparel and more . In addition to retail , they also have a small menu of classic American fare , which has proven very popular with foreign and local customers alike .
“ We try to do an upscale retail store to a certain point . I do have something for everybody , though ,” said Norberg . In addition to some of those more upscale items , they also offer some collectible souvenir items and lots of other unique items and gifts , like candles , pillows and dinnerware .
Norberg and her husband , who is retired , moved back to Custer around a year ago . Norberg said she has been coming to Custer since she was a small child , and she introduced her husband to the Black Hills . It wasn ’ t long before he was obsessed with the Hills , and the two bought land in Custer .
“ I love the Black Hills . I don ’ t know why I ever left ,” said Norberg .
Norberg was born and raised in Minnesota and moved to South Dakota initially in 2000 before going to Montana . When she returned she knew she wanted to open a business ; retail was the perfect avenue to pursue that goal since it was an area she knew a great deal about . “ It ’ s kind of in my blood to do retail ,” said Norberg . She followed her mother around as she worked as a sales representative . “ I have been around this since I was a little kid ,” she said . The business is a family affair , and it is her , her children and their significant others who make up the work force of the business .“
Norberg said when people come to the Black Hills to visit they are going to seek out souvenirs . Custer ’ s Last Stop offers that in spades , especially with the recent expansion of its retail offerings . Buffalo-themed apparel is one of the main focuses , as is Western wear . In the expanded area there are toys for the children , as well as cowboy hats for the children . Norberg notes that cowboy hats for adults will soon be offered as well .
