APPENDIX 1: WORK EXPERIENCE – DIFFERENT TYPES OF STUDENTS AND HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM NB this summary does not deal with either (a) paid working e.g. weekends where person is under 18; or (b) work shadowing only (unpaid). Common to all where under 18 • Induction (same as for everyone but with additional section for young people). • Young person’s risk assessment (per BHA Red Book). • Child safeguarding policy (per BHA/NTF). • Need to notify insurer. For 16-18 year olds on a pre-or post-Racing Schools placement For 18 + as part of a college course • N  o specific BRS/NRC/National Stud formalities unless post-course. • Trainers have to pay them under the MOA. • C  ould be extra insurance cost if more than two weeks. • For trainer, need to register on Stable Employees Register. • T  rainers have to pay them under NTF/ NASS Memorandum of Agreement (‘MOA’) unless. • For trainer, RIABS contribution? Worker can apply for RIABS – contact NTF for details – t  hey are on a Government approved Traineeship (can be up to 24 y o); or – a 6 week NRC trial; or – on day release from school For 14-16 year olds on a two-week placement .. in which case can offer travel expenses/ lunch costs. • Likely to be forms from the college. • S  tuds are not obliged to pay a wage but can offer travel expenses/lunch costs.
