Tack & Equipment
• How to tack up the horse for exercise safely, as instructed
• PPE required and safety equipment for the horse, including reflective clothing
• Safety considerations when mounting and dismounting sensible Thoroughbreds from a block or leg up, including on the move
• How to safely assist an experienced rider to mount a young, fresh or challenging horse
• The effects on the horse of tack causing discomfort
• A range of common specialist tack and equipment and benefits of use
• Principles of how to work safely to assist to tack up and untack horses for exercise with specialist tack and equipment
• Recognise and describe the signs of discomfort in a horse associated with mounting, ridden exercise and dismounting
• The importance of riding with an appropriate level of contact through the reins
• The important factors to consider in making decisions of suitability of length of stirrup
• What to do in the event of adverse going, adverse weather or in the event of an accident
• How to care for a horse after routine and strenuous exercise
• How the horse can respond to the fitting of specialist tack
• How to maintain and securely store specialist tack and equipment, ensuring safety for horse and rider
