Flipping a 4th grade Math Classroom

By: Emily Upton

My study attempted to answer the question: Is a flipped classroom model (in which students engage in individual learning online, then meet with the teacher to practice) effective in replacing whole group instruction to guide gifted fourth grade math students to demonstrate mastery of content when compared to mastery of content when students participate in traditional whole group instruction? If gifted students demonstrated growth on these assessments, it can be concluded that the flipped classroom model has been successful at replacing whole group instruction for these students.

After analyzing the preliminary results, it is evident that students showed growth from pre to post assessment. This growth indicates that even though students did not participate in whole-group lessons, they were able to understand the concepts by participating in the flipped classroom model. This may indicate that the flipped classroom model would be beneficial for gifted students at other grade levels and content areas in giving them the chance to work through more self-paced, rigorous tasks while their classmates receive whole group instruction.
