SOARING TO NEW HEIGHTS
Augmenting
Reality
By Jennifer Purtee
My culminating Master’s project took a sharp
turn shortly before the final semester. Originally, I
had planned to research the effects of a
behavior management system based solely on
intrinsic rewards. Somewhere along the way,
though, I became intrigued by augmented
reality. Remember Total Recall with Arnold
Schwarzenegger? It all seemed very futuristic
back then, but the evolution of technology has
made it easier to alter our reality. As a teacher, I
am compelled to ask, “How can it be
manipulated to impact education?”
First, I explored
augmented reality
through several
available applications.
I had to practice
augmenting reality
before I took it to the
next level of creating
an augmented reality
classroom tour.
These two-dimensional cards pictured above look plain to the naked eye.
In an augmented reality, those cards are alive with fun characters who
join me in guiding viewers around my classroom! Still, don’t understand?
Pokemon Go is an application created with augmented reality – people or
things that aren’t actually there begin to appear when viewing through a
lens
