IN THE FIVE YEARS PRIOR TO THE 2010 SEASON THE
GIRLS VARSITY PROGRAM HAD LOST 43 OF 57 GAMES
PLAYED. THEY HAD ONLY REGISTERED SIX
VICTORIES. SINCE 2010, THE TEAM HAS WON 12
GAMES AND IMPROVED FROM 5-5-1 LAST
SEASON TO 7-6-1 IN 2011. AFTER THE FIRST
FIVE GAMES THIS SEASON THE TEAM
STRUGGLED WITH FOUR DEFEATS, BUT
IMPROVED TO LOSE ONLY TWO MORE
GAMES IN THE NEXT NINE GAMES. BY
WINNING SEVEN GAMES THIS MEANT THE
GIRLS SOCCER PROGRAM REGISTERED
THEIR FIRST ‘WINNING’ SEASON IN
BROOKLYN FRIENDS’ SCHOOL HISTORY.
A little bit
of history
The soccer season is a whirlwind from start to finish. As a
coach, I feel just as the team finds it’s groove and players
begin to truly flourish in a team setting the season is over.
The team broke several
school records including
finishing with their firstever winning season.
Madeleyn finished her senior year at BFS with 14 goals on the
season, and became the All-Time Top Goalscorer for the
school with 32 goals. It will now be up to the next crop of
players to emulate her achievements. This is why I enjoy
keeping records, not to live in the past, but to set goals for the
future in the hope it inspires others to always look to achieve
more.
The team scored 42 goals this season, 19 more than last year.
and conceded only 24 goals, 6 less than in 2010. The goal
difference improved from -9 in 2010, to +18 in 2011. Six clean
sheets from Sophie also helped the team improve in this area.
Analyzing the statistics a little deeper suggests we have made
huge strides with our shooting accuracy. Shooting accuracy
improved by 10%, from 58% in 2010, to 68% in 2011. This is
even more impressive when you consider we do not have a
permanent soccer field or goal to shoot on. It proves that
raising awareness of areas of improvement and use of
appropriate activities and practices will develop a team. Not
