Toy Hacking @ Maker’s Lab With Orianna Baez
Toy hacking is a creative, reverse engineering project: learn how something
works by taking it apart, and then make it new again! This activity inspires
experimentation and exploration. The A.I.M. Afterschool “Maker’s Lab”
club teaches the concept of design thinking – a creative process that can be
taught and taps into an individual’s natural creativity. We can go through the
stages of discovery, interpretation and ideation in one afternoon! A key part
of “toy hacking” is circuit bending; students learn how to customize the
circuits in low-voltage, battery powered toys to create a new sound or action.
One of our “makers” used circuit bending on his toy to make it play ship
noises instead of Mary Had A Little Lamb! This activity was a collaboration
between the A.I.M. Afterschool Program and the Rockingham Free Public
Library. Many thanks to the RFPL Youth Director, Samantha Maskell for
all her great work! Be on the lookout for more exciting activities during our
next A.I.M. session, starting February 10.
