Art News With Ms. Massucco
Grade 5 and 6 students will be finishing up a fantasy landscape painting. Students were introduced to paintings by an abstract
painter named Friedensreich Hundertwasser to analyze his colorful and decorative style. Students used photos of local
architecture to create their own abstract landscape. Attention to detail, patterns, use of space & color are all coming together for
students as they work to complete their paintings.
Grade 7 students are also working on abstract painting with a personal theme. Students are learning safety with x-acto knives as
they cut out some shapes to create a bas relief effect in their painting. Students will be using various paints and techniques to
finalize their project.
Grade 8 students will be taking all the forms they made out of papier maché and will be making a sculpture. Students looked at
glass work by Dale Chihuly for inspiration for their sculpture. Students experimented with ways to use color in an abstract way
with eye droppers and liquid watercolors on a balloon paper form. For completion, students may work independently to
compete work or they may combine their colorful shapes into a larger abstract sculpture.
Art Plus Drink it. Think it. Make it. Win it.
Art Plus is a 4th period elective class. Students sign up to do art for the whole year. Kids from all grades work on independent
projects, class assignments, and community projects. Several students have taken on a recycling challenge and will be building
the bucket loader, Scoop, from Bob the Builder. The rules state that the project needs to be made out of milk cartons from the
cafeteria. At least 100 cartons will be washed and dried and used for the construction of this project. Only 20% of the
construction will be made of materials that are not milk cartons and those materials need to be renewable.
Additionally, students need to write a 200 word essay explaining how your school would use the $5000.00 prize money for a
green project. We will let you know when we win!!!
