common. Results of heat like this can already be seen in Western America. California has
been experiencing a drought for what seems like forever, and this drought has dried out
the soil and the foliage. Fires are a normal and common occurrence for the residents of
California, but this most recent fire is more devastating than ever before. Deadly events
such as these fires will become more and more common in dry places like California.
Global warming increases the risk of more frequent and heavier rainfall, snowfall, and
more kinds of precipitation. As this increases, so does the risk of harsher and potentially deadly
flooding. The reason that there are more floods is because of global warming. Warmer air holds
more moisture, so there is a bigger chance of precipitation.
What can we as students to to make Earth a better place?
Although we are part of a school community that is/has taken considerable action towards
becoming more sustainable, how can we, as individual students, help in making a change? There are
many simple things that will help a lot in the effort to avoid a detrimental change in temperature.
For example, the kitchen is one of the places where a lot of waste is produced and incorrectly
disposed of afterwards. One thing that is essential is cutting down on the amount of meat you buy
and eat. The raising and breeding of livestock, lamb and cattle in particular, causes a huge carbon
footprint that can easily be lessened or even stopped. This may sound like a big deal to for some
meat-loving households, but you don’t need to stop eating meat altogether. As said previously,
lamb and cattle are the main producers of carbon emissions in the food industry and choosing
another meat option, such as chicken or pork. As well as buying less meat, you can choose a
healthier choice and buy more locally sourced produce. This helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions
because the produce does not have to be shipped from places like Mexico, which are across the
world from us.
Transportation is also a huge source of most of our carbon emissions. Walking and taking
more sustainable methods of transport, especially in cities, will help a lot. For example, taking
public transport and walking when you only have to travel short distances can greatly reduce
gasoline and diesel emissions and will also reduce the air quality that you are breathing in the
