Teens strive for perfection
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) statistics, “219,000 cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed on people age 13-19 in 2010”(par. 2). Some of these procedures include:
Rhinoplasty: Surgically reshaping the nose. This may be performed to straighten the bridge, remove unappealing hump, reshape bulbous nose tip, or open breathing passages. According to ASPS “ 35,000 rhinoplasty procedures were performed on patients age 13-19 in 2010”. (par. 9)
Otoplasty: Ear plastic surgery to correct protruding ears and is corrected by pinning the ears back. “Otoplasty made up 11 percent of all cosmetic surgical procedures performed on this age group in 2010” (par.10)
Breast Augmentation: Enlarging and reducing breast size. In women ages 18-21 years of age, only saline breast implants can be used for augmentation according to the FDA. “ More than 8,500 breast augmentations were performed on 18-19 year olds in 2010, up 3 percent from 2009” (par. 14) .
