Doing Our Part to End Hunger- Locally & Globally

ICA Food Shelf- MTKA
March is the month Minnesota focuses on food insecurity in our communities . ICA , our local food shelf , has set a goal of raising $ 150,000 and 150,000 pounds of food this year . To support this goal , Bethlehem ' s Minnetonka campus encourages the donation of any non-perishable food and financial donations .
If you have wondered how effective ICA is , here are some facts of services provided :
• 1,958 households received a total of 1,455,358 pounds of food in 2016
• 181 homeless preventions
• 151 transportation services
• More than 782 other client services , including 59 leading to job placements
In 2016 , Bethlehem ' s Minnetonka campus donated 874 pounds of food and $ 2,610.00 .
SQUASH HUNGER- Minnesota FoodShare March Food Drive
Did you know that 1 in 10 families in Minnesota worry about where they will get their next meal ? Three out of four public school teachers say they regularly see students come to school hungry . Bethlehem Lutheran Church Twin Cities accepts food shelf donations throughout the year to address this problem .
Community Emergency Service ( CES ) - MPLS
Located just 4 miles from Bethlehem ' s Minneapolis campus , Community Emergency Service ( CES ), served over 70,000 client visits last year , giving away half a million pounds of food .
At CES , both groceries and cash donations received in March receive a multiplier donation from Minnesota FoodShare . Groceries that are especially needed are :
• 100 % fruit juice
• cooking oil
• flour and sugar ( 4 pound bags )
• canned meats ( tuna , salmon , chicken , beef stew and chili )
• canned fruit
• canned tomato products
• coffee
• hygiene products ( toothbrushes , toothpaste , feminine sanitary products , toilet paper )
• baby items ( disposable diapers , wipes , baby powder and baby lotion ).
Other groceries are welcome also . Cash donations are used to purchase groceries from large food banks where $ 1.00 can purchase about 10 times more than at retail grocery stores .
Please Help :
• Bring non-perishable groceries to either campus . Canned or boxed items are best . Please avoid glass containers and check expiration dates on food items . Minneapolis campus : place in the grocery carts in the Gallery Minnetonka campus : place in the ICA basket or cart behind the Welcome Desk
• Make a check payable to Bethlehem Lutheran Church Twin Cities with " CES " or " ICA " in the memo line and place in the offering plate .
• Pray for the work of CES & ICA Foodshelves and those who are served .
• Volunteer- Opportunities are available for both ICA and CES , see page 11 .
Bread for the World 2017 Offering of Letters-
( MPLS ) Sundays , March 12 & 19 ( MTKA ) Sunday , March 26
The focus for 2017 is addressing the nutritional needs of children in the United States through continued support for programs that provide adequate nutritional benefits to women and children . Please join other Bethlehem members again this year as we write letters to Congress in support of the programs that have proven most effective over time for hungry people . Last year , the letters you wrote to senators and representatives did make a difference . Stop by the Bread for the World table in the Gallery to pick up paper , envelopes , and information on March 12 or 19 ( MPLS ) & 26 ( MTKA ).
