GAVEL CALENDAR
WINNING EDGE WORKSHOPS
Focused on developing the techniques
and skills necessary for public speaking,
the University of Kelaniya Gavel Club
initiated the ‘Winning Edge’ workshop
series this year as well, aiming to
instruct both undergraduates and
school students of Gavel Clubs in
Sri Lanka. The first workshop of the
series was titled “Language, Grammar,
Pronunciation: Making an impact in
Speech & Communication” and was held
on the 4 th of July 2017 at the MBA Halls
in the University of Kelaniya. Conducted
by Toastmaster Dian Abeyewardena,
the workshop concentrated on correct
articulation of words, proper use of
grammar, and common mistakes made
by Sri Lankan English speakers. The
undergraduates and school students in
attendance were a part of an engaging
and an educational session which would
definitely serve them well as a stepping
stone to mastering the art of public
speaking.
The second workshop of the series
was conducted by Toastmaster Diren
Dantanarayana on the 21 st of November
2017 at the Career Guidance Unit
targetting the semifinals of Best Speaker
2017. He highlighted the significance of
using various techniques to improve the
content and delivery of prepared and
impromptu speeches. The audience not
only learnt new tools to public speaking,
but also had a great time.
WORKSHOP ON ARTICLE WRITING
The Best Speaker 2017 Magazine Team
took matters into their own hands when
they decided to hold a workshop on article
writing, so that the members of the club
could learn all the tips and tricks before
they submitted an article that would
make it to the pages of the magazine. The
workshop was conducted by journalist
Ms. Kamanthi Wickramasinghe on the
12 th of September at the Career Guidance
Unit Training Center. The Gaveliers and
undergraduates present took part in
an informative session with hands-on
approach to article writing.
