known fact that English language is much important in global communication and that we have given prominence in speaking English language. The difference I saw is vast and I am certain that we have the potential to positively influence the society that we live in. So, I believe that the Gavel Club helps in developing these skills; language skills and communication skills. Most importantly, team spirit in the club is notable. A glamorous event like “Best Speaker” wouldn’t be a huge success if not for the support of all the members, directed by good leadership, proper organization and creativity. This year the “Best Speaker” is organized for the 13 th consecutive time, which highlights the continuity of the team spirit of the club throughout these years that have passed. Thus, I firmly believe that the choice I have made to become a member of the University of Kelaniya Gavel Club is the best choice I ever made in my life. A hectic mind, Filled with mist-cloaked thoughts, Strives to untangle A twisted mass of confusions; Struggles to out-speak The words unspoken, To tell the world What HE thinks. How many untold stories will be buried? Within your heart, Unless YOU speak them? Long Live Gavel; To speak The Unspoken, To sing The thoughts unsung! Gavelier ASHANI JAYASUNDARE Faculty of Humanities THE MISFITS T he day I walked in to Gavel I realized the true meaning of the word “misfits”. Ok, let’s face it. University was not what we expected at all. After a few weeks of lectures, everything falls into this monotonous practice that will drive you to boredom. For me the situation was lectures and then go home, lectures and then go home. Basically, a vicious, repetitive cycle. It was too much for me and my friends, and we thought that some activity would help to erase the boredom. Now, I have friends who are into athletics, dancing, drama etc. and it was pretty much easy for them to realize where they fit in, but I was no trophy level athlete or dancer to add to that equation, so I was in a dilemma. One teacher from my school told me to try the Gavel Club, and I went with my friends for the first meeting, and from there onwards, the Gaveliers were not able to get rid of me! You see, it is this perfect place where you not only can develop your skills of public speaking, but also meet seniors and friends from all over the university. The day I did my first speech, also known as a table topic, everyone congratulated me and commented on parts where I could improve. Believe me; I’ve never missed a table topic since! Gavel is not only a place to improve you, it’s also a family of misfits! Gavel will embrace you with open arms no matter who you are. So now I go there every Thursday, with my athletic friends, drama friends, dancing friends, and believe me we are having a blast! Too good to be true? Come to the Career Guidance Unit-Training Centre on a Thursday, at four in the evening, and see for yourself! Gavelier NIPUNI PERERA Faculty of Humanities BEST SPEAKER MAGAZINE 2017 53
