GAVEL CALENDAR
‘GAVEL EKKA AVURUDU’
SINHALA & TAMIL NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS
The sun dawned earlier on the 2 nd of
April to the Cyber Ground of University
of Kelaniya. It was the day of Gavel
Ekka Avurudu, a day awaited eagerly by
present and past Gaveliers. Dressed in
colourful traditional costumes and with
bright smiles on the faces, everything
was ready to mark the day. The event
began with the lighting of the traditional
oil lamp by President Gavelier Chamodi,
the two Chairpersons of the event,
Gaveliers Liomie and Madumal, and a
few new and past Gaveliers. The table
was abundantly filled with traditional
sweetmeats bringing the taste of Avurudu
to the venue.
The most exciting part of the day came
with the traditional games and the ground
was filled with the roaring cheers of the
Gaveliers. Adding colour to the day was
a beautiful dance performed to the tunes
of a fusion of Avurudu songs by Gaveliers
Dulanya, Himansa, Nayomi, Kasuri,
Dinuki, Shanika, Dhanushan, Madhumal
and Malitha. For a moment, all of the
Gaveliers were taken back to a very real
Avurudu atmosphere. Lifting their spirits
even more was the moment the Gavel
Avurudu Kumara and Avurudu Kumariya
were announced. Out of the highest
number of votes, handsome Gavelier
Thushan became the Gavel Avurudu
Kumara while beautiful Gavelier Dulanya
became the Gavel Avurudu Kumariya.
The time passed but it was hardly felt,
as the sun was setting on the day, the
Gaveliers joined in a sing along session,
while all hearts were full of the day’s
memories.
GAVEL TRIP
The Gavel Trip is the most awaited event in the Gavel calendar.
This time, the Gavel trip was organized to visit the Kanneliya
Forest Reserve in Galle by the project chairpersons Gaveliers
Dilmini and Supun.
Many Gaveliers and past Gaveliers joined this occasion. There
was singing and dancing all the way to the forest reserve
and it was filled with so many memories. There was hiking,
swimming and many more activities that filled the day. It was
a memorable time with good friends.
