UNIVERSITY OF MORATUWA
As an undergraduate from the University of Moratuwa, Faculty of Engineering, Gavel was one of the foremost experiences I ever had as a part of my University Career. While ever being thankful to the Gavel family back at Moratuwa, I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the organizers of Best Speaker 2017 for the amazing work they have pulled off in terms of elevating the Public speaking platforms of Sri Lanka.
Hailing from the influence of my mother, the one mentor to whom I have always looked up to, public speaking and debating has always been my passion and my dream. While Music, Movies and Comedy fill the rest of my day, I dream about being a successful entrepreneur in the future with a life, filled with love for life and respect for humanity. As teens we build our lives on the shoulders of many, and so did I. I am ever grateful to my mother, father, brother and all those who love me dearly.
Best Speaker was a dream which would never have seen the light of day if not for two Gaveliers from University of Kelaniya, who compelled me to enter this amazing journey. I am ever grateful for these two amazing individuals for the number of times they stood by me. Best Speaker was indeed a memorable run, and let the last lap be legendary. Cheers!
DINUKI MEEGODA
UNIVERSITY OF KELANIYA
Being a speaker gave me the opportunity to inspire and persuade people through the little things I learned in my life. Every time I step on to the stage it feels like it’ s a one in a million chance. Sometimes I felt, I shouldn’ t share the tragedies I have faced in my life thinking it’ ll make the audience sad but after talking with some experienced speakers I changed my mind. As they said speaking what you have gone through in life and telling how you overcame it, will help someone who is going through the same situation and that I can give hope to them.
So I believe anyone can speak and share their stories to inspire others. Best Speaker is the first ever speech competition I’ ve participated. As being a finalist in a speech competition for the 2nd time I believe this is my greatest opportunity. I hope to give life to words and inspire at Best Speaker 2017.
NIPUNI PERERA
UNIVERSITY OF KELANIYA
Ever since I was a young girl, I have always liked to tell stories to an audience. Be it family or friends, I was always the entertainer. As I grew up, my desire to inspire people around me and to share my stories with them started to increase. It started from me making speeches and acts in the morning assembly and escalated to stage performances. When I got into university, I heard about the Gavel Club and public speaking and I knew that I had to join. Gavel was not only fun but also allowed me to brush up my skills with the help of my fellow Gaveliers and mentors.
Best Speaker 2017 is a massive platform for public speakers and so far it has taught me so much about myself. I’ m grateful for the University of Kelaniya Gavel Club for this valuable opportunity for young public speakers around the country.
Last but not least, I would like to say that public speaking is simply speaking out your mind to ignite and inspire. Your words have the power to change, to heal and to make a difference. So take a chance, become a Gavelier, test your potential today!
