member has the opportunity to develop and practice communication and leadership skills,
which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.”
T
he University of Kelaniya Gavel Club is the first ever Gavel Club initiated in South Asia. Ever since it’s
initiation in 2004, the club has grown while serving and offering great opportunities not only to the
undergraduates of University of Kelaniya, but to the entire university as well as the school community
of Sri Lanka. The Gavel Club has facilitated many prospects, along with instructional and educational material
to uphold its members’ skills.
The Gavel Club also organizes various events focused on fulfilling the club’s main objectives; communication,
language, and leadership skills. The most glamorous event hosted by the club is the All Island Inter University
Best Speaker Contest, which brings together undergraduates of Sri Lankan state universities on a single
platform to compete for the esteemed “Best Speaker” title. The Inter School Best Speaker Contest and the
“Unleash Yourself ” workshop series are other significant events in the club calendar that accommodate the
young, emerging speakers of the country.
In a nutshell, Gavel is a family where many undergraduates start their public speaking career while spreading
their wings to new heights.
