SP EA KE R Dr Crystal Oldman QNI GENERAL PRACTICE NURSING SURVEY Over the summer months, the Queen’s Nursing Institute launched a national general practice nursing survey to understand the key issues currently affecting practice nurses. Over 3,000 responses were received. This follows on from the QNI’s survey of district nurses which led to the landmark 2009 document, 2020 Vision. The report described the district nursing service in the UK and the challenges and opportunities, from the perspective of district nurses. The findings identified technology, workforce planning and discharge planning as the key issues affecting district nurses at the time. The findings from the general practice nursing survey will enable the QNI to support practice nurses and ensure they have the same opportunities and career framework as other community nurses. The findings will be published later this year. “We felt it was time to survey general practice nurses to understand from their perspective what issues they face in their role,” says Anne Pearson, QNI’s Director of Programmes. “We largely used the template from the district nursing survey but expanded on certain areas a little. For example, we asked about terms and conditions and development opportunities. The district nursing report really helped to inform what our priorities should be and we’re acting on them. The hope with the general practice nursing survey is that it will very much identify three key themes and prioritise the work we do with general practice nurses. We’re really grateful we received so many responses and we now have a responsibility to analyse and convey those issues as general practice nurses see them.” Best Practice in Nursing is supported by the Queen’s Nursing Institute – see their keynote session on 22 October, Theatre 1 www.bestpracticeinnursing.co.uk Join the conversation @BPinNursing 3
