BEST... 70th anniversary
This secluded shore of old Thessaloniki on the Ai-Giannis beach
(Nea Krini) was meant to be closely associated with one of the
city’s oldest fish taverns since 1945. In this refugee settlement,
Dimitris Mamais built his own “paradise”, his own Miami...
And he succeeded, with lots of love and care and with the
invaluable help from his Asia Minor-born mother, in making
it a household name. At that time, it was the Sunday getaway
away from the city’s hustle and bustle for the residents of
Thessaloniki. Fishermen drawing their nets, seagulls feasting
their eyes on the delectable food and revelers enjoying sardine
and ouzo by the seaside... Generations of locals, as well as his
own family, have grown up in this humble dining establishment.
Genuine flavors, personal care and, above all, a family-like
ambience have turned it into a must do for every visitor... It soon
rose to prominence with several high-profile people visiting this
fish tavern, which, run by chef Dimitris Lapatas, acquired a
cosmopolitan flare.
But the years went by and it was 4 years ago that Dimitri’s
three grandchildren, his namesake and Dina and Gogo Tertsi,
took over. They may have its style and décor altered, yet they
have stayed true to their grandpa’s mindset, which says “let no
one leave this place hungry”. Raised in this place, and with the
memories of a lifetime forever etched in their heart, not only have
they cemented its quality and fame, but they have also helped it
reach an even higher level! Transferred to the atmosphere of an
older era from the very first moment we set our foot in it, we taste
fine Greek flavors, fresh fish, lavish salads, homemade spreads,
mouthwatering starters, along with an impeccable service.
Following into her grandpa’s footsteps that used to purchase the
necessary ingredients from the Modiano market, Dina visits
every morning the fish market to pick the best from the catch of
the local fishermen... And we, indulging in an island-like setting,
grab a seaside table or one at its neatly arranged halls and
enjoy from grilled fish and codfish with garlic dip to cuttlefish
slow-cooked in red wine, fish soup, mussel pilaf and lobster
pasta! We take pleasure in sipping fine distillates and wine from
its updated list, and make sure there is room left for “halvas”!
Tip: Its interior is available for hosting social events, while the
establishment’s engagement in charity gets thumbs up!
