THE HISTORICAL SQUARE
Η πλατεία της Σπλάντζιας ( Πλατεία 1821 , σή µ ερα ) βρίσκεται στην Παλιά Πόλη των Χανίων και είναι από τα πιο χαρακτηριστικά ση µ εία της πόλης . Η Σπλάντζια κατά την Τουρκοκρατία αποτελούσε το κέντρο της πόλης καθώς ήταν η παλιά και µ εγαλύτερη συνοικία των µ ουσουλ µ ά- νων ( 150 ελληνικές συνοικίες , 780 τούρκικες ). Θα συναντήσετε την εκκλησία του Αγίου Ρόκκου , αλλά και του Αγίου Νικολάου αλλά φη µ ισ µ ένος είναι και ο τεράστιος πλάτανος στο κέντρο της . Κάτω από τον πλάτανο υπήρχε ένα αραβικό κιόσκι , όπου είχαν δικαίω µ α να κάθονται και να απολα µ βάνουν τον καφέ τους τιτλούχοι της πολιτείας και επιφανείς µ πέηδες και αγάδες . Στον πλάτανο , επί Τουρκοκρατίας , Έλληνες χριστιανοί , οι οποίοι µ άχονταν για τον αγώνα υπέρ της κρητικής ελευθερίας , απαγχονίστηκαν , εκτελέστηκαν και βασανίστηκαν .
Splantzia Square ( 1821 Square ) is one of the most characteristic parts of the Old Town of Chania . During the Ottoman occupation , Splantzia used to be the center of the city given that it was the oldest and largest residential area of the muslims ( 150 Greek neighborhoods , 780 turkish neighborhoods ). Here you will find the Church of Saint Rokkos , and Saint Nicolaos , whilst equally renown is the large plane tree , at its most central spot . An arabic kiosk used to be found beneath the plane tree , where the noble personalities of the ottoman rule liked to drink their coffee together with eminent beys and aghas . During the Ottoman Rule , the plane tree become the location where many Greek Christians , who fought in favor of the liberation of Crete , were tortured , executed or hung .
