Ababa( meaning poppy in Spanish) at the picturesque Isodion alley in the heart of the Old Town, with more than 10 years of presence, is not just another café-bar, but an alternative hangout being the only gallery in the city, with a particular character and concept. Therefore its“ one of a kind” and its reputation has fairly surpassed the borders of Chania. Ababa has emerged into a benchmark thanks to its unpretentious, unique, artistic setting which reflects the personality of its founder, painter Dimitris Asteriou, who uplifts our mood with the colors and artistic kitsch items he so passionately collects. A change in this year’ s favorite hangout we really liked, was that the gallery at the opposite space is now hosted within Ababa including artwork of Dimitris Asteriou himself, adding more artistic touches to an already arty space. The artworks are available for sale. At this artistic environment, with an old coffee shop atmosphere, outdoor tables on the paved alley and carefree frequenters, we enjoy coffee and local beverages and juices whilst reading a book, chatting or playing board games. At the same time, Ababa is also kids friendly as the little guests can find here many things to keep them busy such as miniature toys! In the evening, it turns into a bar with friendly attitude, inviting us to taste its updated cocktail list. Definitely try the Merkozin( honeyed raki with orange) and the Troika( raki, lime and soda), or a cooling sangria to jazz, soul and funky music, or dance nights, classic Greek songs, 90’ s tunes and disco and‘ 80’ s music during special Saturday nights, always depending on the mood and the company. Daily from 08:00 until late( during summer), 10:00 until late( during winter). The gallery is daily open from 11:00. Great plus, the great WiFi, a service hard to find in Chania.
