espite the fact that it is not highly developed
for tourism, Amfissa (just 15 minutes before
reaching Itea, 13 km) belongs to all those destinations which are worth a one-day trip and a stop here
could last for more time than what you had expected!
Its history starts from ancient times and played an
important role over the passage of centuries. A special landmark is considered the great contribution
of the entire region of Salona (as it was called in
medieval times) during the Greek Revolution of 1821.
Surrounded by Parnassοs and Giona and having as
a hallmark its well-known olive grove, stretching like
a green carpet in front of it, the city today is a good
“matching” of slow paces, hospitable people and
beautiful images.
WHAT TO DO
• Climb up to the Castle of Salona – the first Greek
castle to be liberated from the Turks in 1821 – enjoy
your promenade and admire the panoramic view of
the whole city.
• Visit the Metropolitan Church of the
Evaggelismos tis Theotokou and the Municipal
Gallery “Spiros Papaloukas”, where the pricked

• Take some time in the Archaeological Museum,
which is housed in the historic dwelling where the
First National Assembly of Eastern Continental
Greece was held in 1821. The museum offers visitors
a full picture of the historical evolution of ancient
Phocis (Kechagia Str., T. 22650 23344).
