ΚΗΦΙΣΙΆ
Άναφέρεται από την αρχαιότητα, µε την
ονοµασία της να αποδίδεται στον ποταµό
Κηφισό. Ωστόσο, µια νεότερη, λαογραφι-
κή ερµηνεία λέει ότι προέρχεται από την έκ-
φραση «Εκεί φυσά», που έγινε «Κει φυσά»,
«Κηφισά» και, τέλος, «Κηφισιά»! Το κέντρο
του αρχαίου δήµου βρισκόταν στο Κεφα-
λάρι, όπου έχουν βρεθεί παλαίστρα και
κρήνη, ενώ στην οδό Κασσαβέτη ανασκά-
φηκαν αρκετοί τάφοι. Κάτοικός της υπήρξε
ο µεγαλύτερος κωµωδός της αρχαιότητας,
ο Μένανδρος (ο Κηφισεύς)! Ο οικισµός
επανεµφανίζεται στα χρόνια της Τουρκο-
κρατίας, όταν Δυτικοί αξιωµατούχοι έχτιζαν
εδώ τα εξοχικά τους. Μετά τη δηµιουργία
του ελληνικού κράτους, το µέρος γίνεται
αγαπηµένος προορισµός... αποδράσεων
και αναψυχής της καλής αθηναϊκής κοινωνί-
ας, αλλά και πλήθους επώνυµων ξένων!
KIFISSIA
The word dates back to ancient times and the
name is attributed to Kifissos river. However, ac-
cording to a more modern and folkloric version
it got its name from the expression «Eki fissa»
(means: The wind blows there), that later be-
came «Ki fissa» (means the same), then «Kifissa»
(one word) and finally «Kifissia»! The ancient
municipality center was in Kefalari, where an are-
na and a water feature were found, while in Kas-
saveti Street several tombs were excavated. One
of the residents was the greatest comedy writer
of the ancient world, Menander (of Kifissia)! The
settlement reappears during the Turkish Rule
when Western officeholders started to build
their holiday lodges here. After the creation of
the greek state, the place became the favourite
recreational and travel destination of the upper
class of Athens and other famous personalities
from abroad!
