Η πλατεία με το χαρακτηριστικό συντριβάνι
όπου συναντιούνται οι οδοί
Πανεπιστημίου, Σταδίου, Αθηνάς,
Πειραιώς, Αγ. Κωνσταντίνου και 3ης
Σεπτεμβρίου, αρχικά ονοµάστηκε
Ανακτόρων καθώς επρόκειτο να
χτιστούν εκεί τα βασιλικά ανάκτορα,
ωστόσο τα σχέδια ανατράπηκαν. Το
οριστικό όνοµά της το πήρε το 1862,
λόγω της συµφιλίωσης δυο αντιµαχόµενων
πολιτικών παρατάξεων που
εορτάστηκε εκεί. Τον 20ο αιώνα η
κεντρική πλατεία γνώρισε μεγάλη
αίγλη με διάσημα cafes και πολυτελή
ξενοδοχεία όπως το Μπάγκειον και
το Μέγα Αλέξανδρος, έργα του αρχιτέκτονα
Ερνέστου Τσίλλερ. Το 2020
ολοκληρώθηκε η πολυαναμενόμενη
ανάπλαση και ανακατασκευή της.

The square with the distinctive
fountain, where Panepistimiou,
Stadiou, Athinas, Pireos, Aghiou
Konstantinou and Tritis Septemvriou
Streets meet. It was originally named
“Anaktoron Square”, as the Royal
Palace was planned to be built there,
however the plan changed. It was
named in 1862 after the reconciliation
of two confronting political parties
that was celebrated there. In the 20th
century, the main square enjoyed a
great glory, with the establishment of
famous cafés and luxurious hotels like
the Bageion and Megas Alexandros,
works by architect Ernst Ziller. In
2020, the very much anticipated
regeneration and reconstruction of the
square was completed.
