A stone’s throw away from Omonoia,
opposite the Town Hall, the impressive
square is surrounded by the main streets
of the city. Its official name is “National
Resistance Square”, in honor of the
resistance of Greek people during the Axis
Occupation of Greece (1941-1944). The
square acquired its current form under the
mayoralty of Kostas Kotzias (1934-1937),
therefore it was named after him after he
died in 1951.

Μια ανάσα από την Οµόνοια, απέναντι
από το Δηµαρχιακό Μέγαρο, η εντυπωσιακή
πλατεία περιβάλλεται από
σπουδαία ιστορικά κτίρια. Η επίσηµη
ονοµασία της είναι Πλατεία Εθνικής
Αντίστασης προς τιµή της αντίστασης
του ελληνικού λαού την περίοδο της
κατοχής (1941-1944). Τη µορφή που
έχει σήµερα απέκτησε επί της δηµαρχίας
του Κώστα Κοτζιά (1934-1937)
γι’ αυτό μετά τον θάνατό του το 1951
πήρε το όνομά του.
