ΣΥΝΤΑΓΜΑ
Είναι η κεντρικότερη, η «επίσημη» πλατεία της πρωτεύουσας και στο πάνω τμήμα της
δεσπόζει το επιβλητικό νεοκλασικό κτήριο της Βουλής των Ελλήνων – ανεγέρθηκε με-
ταξύ 1836-1847 και μέχρι το 1929 ήταν τα Ανάκτορα. Λόγω της παρουσίας τους πολ-
λοί εύποροι Αθηναίοι έσπευσαν να κτίσουν τα πολυτελή σπίτια τους στη γύρω περιοχή
προκειμένου να βρίσκονται κοντά στον βασιλιά. Εδώ βρίσκεται το μνημείο του Αγνώ-
στου Στρατιώτου (η αλλαγή φρουράς των ευζώνων που το φυλούν εντυπωσιάζει τους
τουρίστες – και όχι μόνο!). Η πλατεία οφείλει το όνομά της στο κίνημα που εκδηλώθηκε
στις 3 Σεπτεμβρίου 1843 και ανάγκασε τον βασιλιά Όθωνα να παραχωρήσει Σύνταγ-
μα. Γύρω από την πλατεία βρίσκονται μερικά από τα πιο εμβληματικά ξενοδοχεία της
Αθήνας, με το Μεγάλη Βρεταννία ασφαλώς να ξεχωρίζει, ενώ από αυτήν ξεκινούν
σημαντικότατες οδοί (Σταδίου, Πανεπιστημίου, Ερμού, Μητροπόλεως, Φιλελλήνων).

SYNTAGMA SQUARE
It’s the most central and “formal” square of the capital; looming above
the square is the imposing neoclassical building of the Hellenic Parlia-
ment – it was built between 1836 and 1847 and until 1929 it was called
Anaktora (that is “palace”). Due to its presence many wealthy Athenians
built their mansions around the area so as to be close to the king. Here we
see the Monument of the Unknown Soldier (the changing of the guards,
the Evzones, impresses the tourists – and everyone else!). The square owes
its name to the movement of 3rd September 1843, which put pressure
on King Otto and forced him to concede a constitution. Around the square
some of the most impressive hotels of Athens can be found; the Grande
Bretagne undoubtedly stands out. The Stadiou Street, the Panepistimiou
Street, the Ermou Street, the Mitropoleos Street and the Philellinon Street
–the most important and known– begin from the square.
