D Breastfeeding decreases the chances
of “over-feeding your baby”. When a
baby is full and content they pull off
the breast. Babies who are bottle fed
are often given the amount of ounces
at each feed the parents feel is neces-
sary, then they are encouraged to drink
every ounce, it is too expensive to
waste formula ! Bottle feeding tends to
encourage overeating which can lead
to obesity.
D Premature infants who breastfeed have
the benefit of decreasing the risk of
developing Necrotizing enterocolitisor
(NEC) disease that affects the gastroin-
testinal tract in preterm infants.
D Some research shows that breastfeed-
ing can also reduce the risk of Type
1 diabetes, childhood leukemia, and
atopic dermatitis (a type of skin rash)
in babies. Breastfeeding has also been
shown to lower the risk of SIDS (sud-
den infant death syndrome).
D Breast fed children are less likely to
contract diseases such as juvenile scle-
rosis, heart disease and cancer before
the age of 15.
D Life can be easier when you breastfeed
– Breastfeeding may take a little more
effort than formula feeding at first. But
it can make life easier once you and
your baby settle into a good routine.
Plus, when you breastfeed, there are
no bottles and nipples to sterilize. You
do not have to buy, measure, and mix
formula. And there are no bottles to
warm in the middle of the night! You
can satisfy your baby’s hunger right
away when breastfeeding.

eases in Bermuda? Encourage

Here !”
D Accept that breastfeeding is
natural so enjoy the bond it
creates between mom and
baby. Revel in the thought
that you are doing your part in
making the best decision for
your infant’s start to life.
