Bermudian goldsmith, Eleanor Patton, recently launched her jewelry business. ‘Bermuda Rocks Jewelley’ designs are inspired by Bermudian architecture and drawing influences from classical and vintage design. Her aim is to bring back the personal touch to jewelry. Eleanor’s work is a combination of tradition metalworking styles with her passion of vintage design into a unique modern style that channels timeless elegance. Ms. Patton spoke to Bermuda Bliss Magazine about her life as a goldsmith.

Q: What inspired you to start your own business?

A: I've honestly never considered that I wouldn't! It might be because of what I do, being a goldsmith, you often are able to run your own business without the need of extra help, at least when you're first starting. I'm also very independent and I like being able to drive the direction the business is going in and having artistic control.

Q: Do you have a favourite design? If so, why is it?

A: I have to say my favourite design is always changing and it's nearly always my newest design! I am currently in love my with Ashley engagement ring, the design is inspired by Moon gates in a classical halo style. Lots and lots of diamonds in other words! It's a very popular piece and a beautiful balance between vintage style and modern design.

Q: How long have you been a goldsmith?

A: I've been working as a goldsmith since I graduated from my BA (hons) in jewelry design and making in 2009, so that's 6 years now. I started learning when I was about 13, going to summer courses and evening classes, although you never really stop learning!

Q: Did you enjoy jewellery making as a young girl?

A: I did, I always loved making jewellery, making anything! My parents would buy me kits for making your own beads in the oven, and I'd drag them to gem stores to spend all of my pocket money on tools and materials.

Q:  How has the response been so far?

A: It's been fantastic! Bermudians certainly appreciate handmade jewellery. I have to keep reminding myself that I only launched the business in June as things are moving very quickly!

Q:  Do you have any encouragement for aspiring goldsmiths and business owners?

A: I would say don't give up, and don't be afraid to ask for help or support. One of the best things I did was working for other goldsmiths, that way I could develop my skills and learn a little about the reality of running your own business. For goldsmiths in particular, try to find your unique style, it's very important to be distinctive, try and do something no one else is doing.

Q: Do you have any additional comments that you would like to add?

A: Thank you for choosing to interview me, I do love to ramble on about my obsession with jewellery making, so it's nice to have a good reason!
