Chiko's Smokey Rub

Chef Michiko Campbell talked to us about his success as a Bermudian entrepreneur, despite the difficult economy. I was impressed with his exuberance about the business he created and his commitment to give back to the community. He gave us his take on the business of being the only combined spice product made in Bermuda.

Tell us about Chico’s Smokey Rub.

I started a dry rub business with the original recipe that is ‘Bermudaised’ to add the smokey flavor that people here like. I’ve begun to create other variations to meet the needs of my customers. My most popular flavour I introduced in October is called Triple Garlic Fusion, and for the holidays I just introduced a Ham Seasoning. It is doing so well that I’m introducing two new rubs inspired by the East, Indian, Moroccan and Asian influence, and the other one will be something that the spice lovers will enjoy.

What makes your product stand out from your competition?

My competition is Ms. Dash or McCormick seasonings that are both American made. Chico’s Smokey Rub stands out because it is a Bermuda product. It is also all of the spices you need in one bottle, giving my customers the advantage of buying only one product and it’s already mixed in the right proportions.

I’m quite impressed that you’ve become an entrepreneur at twenty-four. What has been the hardest part about getting your product from an idea in your head to people’s kitchens?

Basically getting everything organised to start the business like the permits. Another issue was getting glass spice bottles since there are none produced in Bermuda.

Who inspired you the most to pursue your dreams?

Definitely my fiancé, Sherelle Simons, was the biggest influence in starting this business. We have been engaged for three years, and together for six. I am a twin and my brother died six years ago in a bike accident. For a long time after his death I wanted to give up on everything and everybody. Sherelle brought me back and encouraged me to pursue this opportunity and does all the graphics (flyers, promotional things, funny adverts) for the business as well as marketing. She designed the bottle labels and designed the website.

How do you think your story will inspire others?

I hope that I can inspire the up and coming entrepreneurs to take a risk and to go for their dreams. Shoot beyond your expectations and don’t let anything stop you in the path of success.

One of my goals with my early success was to give back to my community. I held a Christmas Eve event for people who were less fortunate by providing a free Christmas meal. That night I served 452 people. I was touched that I could give back to the community. Life is about giving back and sharing. During the event I also raised $1000 to give to a local charity, Eliza Doolittle’s Society.

Is Chiko's Smokey Rub only available in Bermuda?

No, I ship it overseas as well. One can order through my website

www.chikosmokeyrub.com. So far it has travelled to New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Canada, England, California, Connecticut and the farthest is Australia.
