A COUNTY-WIDE CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS

NICK BURCHARD
Kamakura, on the outskirts of Tokyo.“ He hired an architect in Japan who wanted to bring in Western influences and combine them with Japanese architecture. The fusion look that this house has tried to achieve was the theme of the house in Kamakura, too.”
What is so charming and special about this entry area— and about the entire home— is that it feels and looks lived in, and not a showcase. Yet everything has its place. There is an understated style that perhaps is one of the trademarks of Jess Cooney Interiors, based in Great Barrington. I can envision this family across time— the children, now five and nine, and this multipurpose room evolving as they get older.
Katy and Reo developed a trust with Cooney’ s team in creating this home that functions so well for them now as well as into the future.
“ We showed them two directions conceptually: one that went very deep and dark and one that went a little bit more Scandinavian,” says Cooney.“ They liked elements of each, so we found a balance. In the end, you want to push a client a little outside of the box so that there’ s a bit of an edge to it, and there’ s something that they’ re really excited or nervous about.”
That may be a wallpaper or window treatment, or tile in the kids’ bathroom, or vintage furniture.
“ They always gave us choices,” says Katy. And those choices were never far from the couple’ s aesthetics.
