The Watervliet Historical Society is organizing a weekend of activities throughout the region in May .
HANCOCK SHAKER VILLAGE
Friday , May 3
New York State Museum in Albany , New York : Private tours of their archived Shaker Collection , 1 – 4 p . m .
Tree of Light by Alyssa Mumtaz , inspired by artwork by Hannah Cohoon , 2021 . Exhibited at Hancock Shaker Village .
Shaker Museum in Chatham , New York : Open house and light refreshments at the future site of the new Shaker Library and Research Center , 9 a . m .– 5 p . m .
Saturday , May 4
Watervliet Shaker Meetinghouse in Colonie , New York : Programs include Watervliet Shaker collections of the New York State Museum ; Memories of Living in the Canterbury or Sabbathday Lake communities ; and Remembering our “ Shaker ” Friends . Includes a box lunch and the opportunity to talk with representatives from all other Shaker sites . 11 a . m .– 3 p . m .
Sunday , May 5
Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield : Free admission and self-guided tours and lunch to registrants of the Watervliet Meetinghouse activities . Shaker Museum in Chatham , New York : Open house and light refreshments at the future site of the new Shaker Library and Research Center , 9 a . m .– 5 p . m . On August 2-6 , Sabbathday Lake in New Gloucester , Maine , plans a convention that centers around the actual day that Mother Ann arrived in America , including time with Brother Arnold , one of the last two living Shakers ; Sister Joan also lives on the property . For more information about this event , visit maineshakers . com . On June 20 , the USPS will unveil 12 collectible stamps at Hancock Shaker Village that show the core elements of Shaker design . The photos were taken by Michael Freeman , several at Hancock ( the meeting room , “ swallowtail ” joints of a bentwood box , a heater stove , and cheese baskets ). The pane selvage features Brother Ricardo Belden ( 1868 – 1958 ) at Hancock , photographed by Samuel Kravitt circa 1935 .
