the country with The Public ' s Mobile Unit starring Donnetta Lavinia Grays. WAM’ s season ends with the regional premiere of Angry, Raucous, and Shamelessly Gorgeous( October 16 – November 2) by Pearl Cleage and directed by Cloteal L. Horne at Shakespeare & Company’ s Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre.“ This is an intergenerational play about artistic legacy and enduring power of women’ s voices in the theater— bold, defiant, and deeply resonant,” says Coreno.“ It’ s a fully realized production rich in design and historical references, nodding to America’ s intellectual and artistic greats, including Tennessee Williams, August Wilson, and Margaret Mitchell, while also interrogating how those writers played a part in perpetuating a cultural imagery of American women, especially Black women, before we / they had a chance to write ourselves / themselves. It’ s a perfect fit for the sharp, discerning Berkshire audiences.”

And because I am queer, Southern, and a playwright who enjoys a nice dinner and a better martini, I thought what better theme to unify a season at the historic Williamstown Theatre Festival than Tennessee Williams.”( See page 66.) The season opens with The Things Around Us( July 17 – August 1), created and performed by Ahamefule J. Oluo, in The Annex. A collection of seemingly unrelated stories and anecdotes that swirl and dance with a live musical score created through looped trumpet, clarinet, and drums. Many Happy Returns( July 18 – August 3) co-created and choreographed by Monica Bill Barnes and co-created and written by Robbie Saenz de Viteri, is also in The Annex. This dance version of a memory play is the story of a woman in the middle of her life who moves with total clarity but can’ t stop revealing the doubt she’ s desperate to dance over. Many Happy Returns is a hilarious, heartwarming look at who we thought we were and a communal search for solace in who we’ ve become. Director Dustin Wills’ reimagination of Camino Real( July 19 – August 31), written by Tennessee Williams in 1952 / 53, will be performed on the Main Stage. The fever dream of a story, unbothered by theatrical conventions, takes place in an unspecified locale where corruption, cynicism, and censorship reign supreme. Next up is the world premiere of Harris’ Spirit of the People( July 17 – August 1) on the Main Stage. The play confronts uncomfortable truths about land and what it means to destroy it.
