From the inception of MAD Magazine , its illustrators and writers satirized and parodied cultural milestones in an accessible manner that brought people together across generational and political lines . Sam Viviano , a former art director of MAD , is the lead advisor among a group of artists , writers , and scholars who helped to curate the exhibition . Viviano recalls that when he was growing up , MAD Magazine played a pivotal role in his childhood . “ My friends and I would read MAD Magazine in the early-1960s , and it would be our little secret . We ’ d get together , share , and laugh , even if we didn ’ t completely understand what it is we were laughing at .” Viviano adds that the editors and writers never talked down to their readers , and they always had something for everyone . “ There was high-level political satire for older readers , but much younger readers could easily enjoy the slapstick comedy of ‘ Spy vs . Spy .’ There was always a statement behind the illustrations and stories that was pertinent , funny , and that the writers believed was worth saying , but it was accessible enough that it didn ’ t leave anyone behind .”
