THIRTEEN YEARS AGO, Berkshire Magazine was launched. It was apparent then, as it still is now, that this magazine not only filled a void in a community without a regional magazine, it also embraced our unique Berkshires and reflected the various aspects that make this area one of a kind. If you told me back then that the magazine would continue to grow and to thrive, 13 years on, I would not have been surprised. I’ m as enchanted now as ever with the wealth of stories this area gives, as well as the Berkshire-based writers and photographers who work so passionately with me to tell these stories. The picture above shows me making a short video about the debut of the magazine. I was sitting in our barn in Otis with my three young children and two dogs and 30 or so chickens somewhere in the vicinity. I was excited to lead a publication that covered the community in which I lived. This issue is another great example of our Berkshires and our coverage— from interviews with performers coming to our cultural venues to a local gallery curating artwork in homes; from our role in the American Revolution to the winner of the Create 4 Freedom essay and poetry contest; from Doris Duke Theatre at Jacob’ s Pillow to Images Cinema in Williamstown. We write about resident chefs, cover music like no other magazine in the region, and highlight authors who are coming to town. My career as a journalist has taken me all over the world, covering communities and people in countries such as Haiti, Sudan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Romania, Turkey, Indonesia, and other places. Now, I have the world in my own backyard, and I hold it in my hands, in Berkshire Magazine. Here’ s to the next 13 years of covering the Berkshires like only we can.
