There are few performers who define the modern Broadway era quite like Kelli O’ Hara. The Tony ® Award-winning star has graced the stage in everything from The Light in the Piazza( 2005) and South Pacific( 2008) to The King and I( 2018) and Days of Wine and Roses( 2023), winning acclaim for her crystalline soprano and commanding presence. She has had crossover success, performing at the Metropolitan Opera( including the powerful The Hours), and has earned Emmy ® and Grammy ® nominations for her work across television, film, and music.
On July 18, O’ Hara returns to the Berkshires for a one-night-only concert at Tanglewood alongside fellow Broadway powerhouse Sutton Foster. Backed by the Boston Pops under the baton of Keith Lockhart, An Evening with Sutton Foster & Kelli O’ Hara pays joyful homage to the legendary 1962 CBS special Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall, the beloved pairing of Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett. The Tanglewood performance promises Broadway showtunes, heartfelt solos, comedy, choreography, and banter as O’ Hara and Foster bring their own chemistry, friendship, and flair to the stage.
We caught up with Kelli recently to talk about the inspiration behind the show, her friendship with Sutton, her admiration for Julie and Carol, and why( at this point in her career) she’ s still looking forward to surprising her audiences— cartwheels and all.
