I ’ VE BEEN TOYING WITH the idea of renaming the magazine “ Six Degrees of Separation .” It definitely fits for the Berkshires , and the name certainly reflects this magazine ’ s content .
Choosing the stories for this issue oftentimes connects with stories from previous issues , as well as the many relationships we ’ ve formed in what is now our 11th year of publication . It ’ s kind of like what Barrington Stage ’ s Alan Paul said in the story , “ The New Directors .” “ So much of putting together a play as a director is unconscious ; you ’ re acting on an impulse .”
First degree of separation is our close relationships with cultural institutions , which have resulted in compelling stories , such “ Cultural Landscape ,” on the Clark ’ s Humane Ecology : Eight Positions exhibition . Second is writer Liam Gorman ’ s trips to The Farmstead Creamery Shop with his kids , leading to a story on that spot (“ The Sweet Spot !”), and it was wonderful to reconnect with Lila Wilde Berle for her recollections of living on the farm (“ Cheers to 100 Years ”). Third is “ Birds in the Hand ,” in which we introduce two new contributors to Berkshire Magazine : photographer Olivia Douhan and writer Scott Edward Anderson , both bird lovers . Fourth is catching up with Deval Patrick . Fifth are what the Berkshires does best — wellness , natural beauty , history , and hospitality . They all come together in “ Taking Good Care ” at Canyon Ranch — where we also did our photo shoot for “ The New Directors ”— our sixth degree of separation . Enjoy the summer in the culturally rich and interconnected Berkshires !

In “ Wouldn ’ t Mama Be Proud ,” on page 60 of the May / June issue , the caption incorrectly identified the person at the piano . It is Arlo Guthrie .
