WHAT A WONDERFUL summer season it’ s been, with live music and stage performances, museum tours and outdoor fun, shopping on Main Street and grazing on popcorn in the cool escapism of a local movie theater. These months have raced by, and now, here we are, heading straight into fall, which promises to be filled with more adventures and entertainment brought to you by our cultural institutions.
On a personal note, it’ s also when the youngest of my three children begins college. Although she will be attending school four hours away( Bates College in Maine), the setting and school feel very close to home.
In this issue, we feature an interview with three college presidents, all women, all leading institutions in the Berkshires. I had the pleasure of sitting in on the conversation, and I left reminded of the importance of college— and the opportunity colleges provide, allowing young people to submerge themselves in learning, 24 / 7. BCC, MCLA, and Williams are certainly in very capable hands, and I wish students of all ages and grade levels a spectacular school year ahead!
I am pictured here with Jaclynn Kastrinakis, who interned with me this summer. Raised in the Berkshires, Jaclynn is now a sophomore at University of Rhode Island. It’ s been a real treat having her company and seeing her learn and create, both in writing and photography. In this issue, you’ ll see her impressive photos in“ Razor’ s Edge.”
You’ ve read this before from me, and you’ ll read it again right here, that we are now in my absolute favorite time of year: the time when we honor 25 individuals who give so much in so many ways to our Berkshires. I am, once again, heartened and humbled by the naming of this year’ s Berkshire 25— and so very proud of where I live! Congratulations to this year’ s honorees, and I look forward to a celebratory reception in October!
