opposites they initially appear to be.“ Grindcore speaks to all the social things that architecture speaks to.” Both can concern themselves with power, politics, social organization, and the way people inhabit a world.
“ You can expect a manifesto out of either,” she adds. That connection became explicit on Memory Theater, released in 2022. Its central concept drew from an old intellectual model Economou encountered through her architectural education: the“ memory theater,” an imagined mental structure in which knowledge and experience could be organized spatially. She translated that architecture into an album.
There is also a productive difference between the disciplines. Architecture as a profession demands permanence, polish, and technical accountability. Grindcore can celebrate rawness. A building must survive the people who designed it. A song may erupt for two minutes and disappear until someone presses play again.
Economou has lived inside both expectations. For years, she tried to simultaneously work on architectural projects from a laptop while Escuela Grind crossed the country. By 2023, the touring schedule had become incompatible with conventional firm life. She left Barry Architects, but she did not stop being an architect. Economou takes projects independently when her schedule permits and also has substitute taught in the same Lenox school system she attended as a child. It makes the apparent contrast even sharper. A student encountering Economou in a classroom might have little reason to imagine what happens when she walks onto a stage, but she enjoys being able to compartmentalize her life and fully express herself in her chosen medium.
Economou does see some division between her public selves, but not dishonesty. She has deliberately learned to listen— to clients, students, bandmates, and audiences— before reacting. Onstage, the balance reverses. The restraint becomes force. The observation becomes performance. And the architect does not disappear so much as change materials.
Full Circle in Pittsfield
For all the miles Escuela Grind has accumulated, its unlikely center remains a basement in the Berkshires. When Economou and Fuentes returned to Pittsfield in 2018, the geographic isolation initially felt like a limitation. Economou had spent much of her youth imagining success as synonymous with leaving. The band’ s music even documented that resentment in an infamous Indoctrination track, which is built around the dismissive nickname she remembered from growing up. Her relationship to the city has changed.
“ The isolation of Pittsfield is great in that it helps us focus on things, but it’ s also maddening,” she says. Without a dense local network of clubs and heavy-music venues, Escuela Grind built its own ecosystem. The band’ s basement hosted DIY shows by visiting underground acts. Audiences drive from Albany and elsewhere.
Justin Altamirano was one of those in the audience. A Berkshire County native who has spent most of his life in the region, Altamirano first found his way into Economou and Fuentes’ s basement not as a future member of Escuela Grind, but because he heard that someone
