Williams does not regard criticism of one’ s country and love for it as opposites. For her, speaking against something she believes is wrong is possible precisely because she remains invested in what America can be.“ I love my country,” Williams says.“ I love it, which is why I’ m rebelling because I love it. If I didn’ t care, what would the point be?”
That may be the clearest lens through which to understand World’ s Gone Wrong.
It is not the work of an artist detached from the world around her, nor of one suddenly discovering political songwriting late in her career. It comes from someone who carried a guitar to demonstrations as a teenager, learned from a poet father who told her never to censor herself, absorbed Dylan and Guthrie alongside blues and gospel, and spent decades transforming difficult experiences into songs. The targets and circumstances change. The philosophy does not.
A Return to Her Roots
When Williams arrives at MASS MoCA in October, she will also return to a part of the country connected to some of her earliest memories of becoming an artist and her deep attachment is to New England’ s wider artistic landscape. One particularly vivid connection lies just north of Massachusetts.
Her father spent time on the staff of the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference at Middlebury College in Vermont, bringing the young Williams into another community of writers and artists. She remembers cabins, woods, cool evenings, writers gathered around a fireplace— and herself bringing out a guitar to sing.
“ I’ ve always loved New England and that whole area in general,” she says.“ It just always had a good feel to me.”
Those memories seem particularly appropriate as Williams prepares for MASS MoCA’ s Hunter Center. The girl who once sat quietly listening to writers discuss their craft eventually became one of America’ s most consequential songwriters herself. The teenager who brought a guitar to demonstrations eventually made an album consciously reaching back toward the communal music she sang there. The daughter taught never to censor herself built an entire career around the proposition. And now, with World’ s Gone Wrong, Williams is still doing what she has always done: listening closely to the world around her, deciding what she has to say about it, and finding the words that refuse to look away. n
Lucinda Williams and her band will perform at MASS MoCA’ s Hunter Center in North Adams on Friday, October 2, at 8 p. m. massmoca. org
