IT ’ S MY FAVORITE TIME OF YEAR , for many reasons : the gorgeous fall foliage , the cooler temperatures , the promise of a new school year , the live music and theater , the museum exhibitions , the outdoor activities , and so much more .
It ’ s also shoulder season in the Berkshires . It ’ s a funny term that has taken on a new meaning . There ’ s a lot happening in these shoulder months ahead .
And there ’ s definitely no shortage of literary offerings , including the 3rd Annual Authors Guild Foundation ’ s Words , Ideas , and Thinkers ( WIT ) Literary Festival from September 27 to 29 . We welcome Rachel Maddow , Tony Kushner , Jamaica Kincaid , Ruth Reichl ( page 90 ), Jennifer Egan ( page 96 ), and other esteemed authors to the Berkshires — many of whom we have interviewed for the magazine .
In “ Fact or Fiction ?” ( page 54 ), Marty Baron , former executive editor of The Washington Post , says , “… the Berkshires is remarkable for its population of highly accomplished and civically engaged individuals …” Yes , indeed , as evidenced by this year ’ s Berkshire 25 ( page 42 ). I am humbled every time I read through the list of this year ’ s talented and dedicated individuals .
We give special attention to a Berkshire 25 alumn , State Rep . Smitty Pignatelli ( page 36 ). Granted , there may be only one Smitty who is widely known in the Berkshires , but there are so many like Smitty who really care and go out of their way to make this a better place to live .
Enjoy the fall — and our fall issue ! The theme for this year ’ s photo contest is “ Furry Friends in the Outdoors .” The deadline to enter is October 7 . Grab your cameras and have some fun ! Find out more at berkshiremag . com / photo-contest .
