LOOKING BACK at when I first moved to the Berkshires some 14 years ago , I recall how I was struck by the friendliness and helpfulness of its community members .
I choose the word “ community ” intentionally , because that sums up the Berkshires . By definition , community is “ a feeling of fellowship with others , as a result of sharing common attitudes , interests , and goals .” That commonality is found in various aspects of the Berkshire community : in its schools , in locally procured food , in the work that we do , in the entertainment we seek , in a healthy lifestyle we strive for . Years back , on what was my first trip out of the country , I traveled to Calcutta , India , where I met with Mother Teresa and spent time with her . One thing that she mentioned to me is the need to reach out and help others , and not to expect anything in return . Here in the Berkshires , a common thread woven through all aspects of life is compassion . We bring attention to that each year in the naming of the Berkshire 25 — calling out 25 individuals who go above and beyond to make this a community that cares . Turn to page 40 to read more . Also in this issue is the debut of Outdoor Rec 413 on page 71 , which highlights all the spectacular outdoor features that the Berkshires has to offer . Speaking of the great outdoors , on the cover is a heartwarming image from last year ’ s photo contest , by Ashley Weeks Cart . Our next deadline is coming right up for this year ’ s contest . The theme ? “ The Great Outdoors .” Go to berkshiremag . com for more on that , and enjoy this beautiful fall season — outdoors — in the Berkshires .
