Laura Mars and Anastasia Stanmeyer at last year ' s Berkshire 25 reception( Julia Kaplan).
SOME PEOPLE ASK ME why I write stories in every issue of Berkshire Magazine, with all that I have to do as the editor. It’ s not out of necessity; it’ s out of desire to be part of the writing team on subjects that greatly interest me, like this issue ' s interviews with author Dava Sobel and Norman Rockwell Museum ' s Laurie Norton Moffatt.
That being said, I take great pleasure in editing the stories by writers who regularly contribute to our pages. These writers are some of the best in their field, and they are very much a part of the communities that we cover. For instance, in this issue, Scott Edward Anderson writes our cover story on the Alvin Ailey American Dance Company’ s return to Jacob’ s Pillow, and Dan McCarthy writes about Circus & the Bard. Taylor Staubach writes about glamping, and Elise Linscott shares her story about Lesley and Ted Rosenthal. Mark Greenlaw covers the music scene at Hot Plate Brewing Co., and Laura Mars writes about sculptor Randy Gilman. Benjamin Lerner covers two subjects that he is equally passionate about: music and recovery.
Speaking of Benjamin, I am particularly thrilled to highlight an article that our publisher, Dr. Joshua Sherman, shares in“ Recovery Takes Center Stage”( page 62). Benjamin takes his personal story of recovery and the belief in the power of music to heal and connect, and brings them to the fore in the world premiere of his one-man concert, Performer, at Barrington Stage Company on September 3. Follow Benjamin on social media; his up-front honesty and connection to his community of followers will take hold of you and lift you up. It does for me.
And I would be remiss if I didn’ t thank our incredible contributing photographers, including Gregory Cherin. Greg is not only talented, but a pleasure to work with on every assignment. We missed giving him credit in our July issue for his photos in the feature " The Residency Effect." I wanted to be sure and shout him out here.
And speaking of photographers …. We are now taking entries for our annual photo contest, whose theme is“ Music in the Berkshires”( a nod to our sister online pub), with the door wide open on your visual interpretation of music. Details are at berkshiremag. com.
