B ER G EN I N T ER N AT I ON AL FEST I VAL 2019 099 BERGEN KUNSTHALL The Festival Exhibition Mari Slaattelid For close to three decades Mari Slaattelid has insisted on the relevancy of the painting, regardless of shifting trends and perceptions of its status in the arts scene.  To Slaattelid, the painting possesses the neces- sary arsenal of means to explore foundational questions about art itself, convey a personal voice on the medium's own terms and at the same time maintain an open dialogue between artwork and society. Without restricting the painting to a cer- tain form of expression, she alternates effortlessly between figurativism and abstraction, between expressive and conceptual painting, all the while exploring the painting in relation to other forms of art such as photography and literature. The Festival Exhibition in Bergen Kunsthall will consist of many new works, produced especially for the exhibition. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo, where a version will be shown in 2020. Together, the two exhibitions constitute the most exten- sive presentation of Slattelid's oeuvre yet. The Festival Exhibition, produced by Bergen Kunsthall since 1953, is established as one of Norway's most important solo exhibitions.
