Unbridled satire about pills, enemas
and diagnosis hysteria.
Argan is not feeling well. Those around him
are not feeling too good either, surrounded as
they are by his numerous pill bottles, stomach
remedies and stories of disease. Fortunately, he
has a daughter of marrying age, and with the
prospect of getting a doctor as a son-in-law,
Argan could not care less about who she really
wants to marry. It is just so convenient to have
someone with a prescription pad in the family.

Behind the scenes, his personal assistant is
working hard to contain the damages caused
by this colossal baby of a man. The despotic
and hypochondriacal person who dominates his
surroundings with bowel cleansings and multi-
ple diseases is portrayed by Mikael Persbrandt.
The director is Stefan Larsson, who next year
takes the position of theatre director at Den
Nationale Scene (The National Stage, Bergen).
The two have collaborated on several occasi-
ons and made great success with Strindberg's
Dødsdansen (The Dance of Death) during the
Bergen International Festival three years ago.
In Bergen, Molière's wild comedy from 1673
becomes an obnoxiously funny confrontation
with diagnosis hysteria and alternative medici-
ne, and with what happens when you read the
Encyclopedia of Common Diseases as if it were
erotic literature.
