Hearing both works in the same concert, we have the opportunity to experience the similarities and differences at close quarters,' says cellist Ernst Simon Glaser in connection with his world premiere performance of Grenager's work at Siljustøl. Ernst Simon Glaser is currently principal cellist with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, the national orchestra of Sweden. Since last autumn he has also taught at the Norwegian Academy of Music alongside Truls Mørk. He opens his Bergen International Festival concert with a work by Olav Anton Thommessen. A participant in many festivals, he has performed with Norwegian symphony orchestras and collaborated with some of the country's foremost musicians. He is known for his extroverted musicianship, virtuosity and a repertoire ranging from the baroque era to the present day. Grøvlen has a predilection for 'ultra-pianistic' repertoire, such as Sergei Rachmaninov and Leopold Godowsky. Her repertoire is very broad, encompassing not only the classical mezzo operatic roles but also numerous rarely-performed and newly-written works. Randi Stene has appeared at many major opera houses, including the Metropolitan in New York; she was Musician in Residence at the 1998 Bergen International Festival and is in great demand at home and abroad as a concert soloist. She is accompanied by Håvard Gimse, who is recognised as an outstanding solo pianist. He is the preferred accompanist of many of Scandinavia's foremost artists. Leif Ove Andsnes, a few young string players and fellow pianist Håvard Gimse invite you to join them in a Hungarian encounter with beautiful contrasts. 'György Kurtág is one of my favourite composers from our own time. In his short pieces he manages to create unique moods, spanning the entire gamut from playfulness to sadness. In our encounter with this concentrated universe we play music by another Hungarian, Franz Liszt.
